For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. (2 Peter 2:18-19)2 Peter 2 is a chapter entirely dedicated to the discussion of false prophets and teachers. Among vivid descriptions like "waterless springs and mists driven by a storm (vs 17)," Peter emphasizes that these types of men "entice unsteady souls... (vs 14), those who are barely escaping from those who live in error." (vs 18). "They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption." (vs 19)
Remember, true freedom - from temptation, addiction, bitterness, etc. - is only found in Christ.
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:34-36)
